End of the World Birding – White-tipped Dove et al

April 24, 2023

White-tipped Dove Fort Hauchuca 4-24-2023

Last year a White-tipped Dove showed up at Garden Canyon on Fort Huachuca for an extended stay. This bird, likely the same individual, was found at nearby Huachuca Canyon last week. It spends much of its time in an abandoned Cooper’s Hawk nest, but would call constantly. This was maddening, as it could be clearly heard, but not seen. It eventually came down to the ground and after a bit of work it was found and well photographed. Lifer. Very limited range and hard to find in the US.

These hummingbirds were seen two years ago at the same location, and there were unconfirmed breeding reports.

Evening Grosbeak 4-17-23 Tanque Verde Wash

Evening Grosbeaks have been widely reported locally since late fall. Fourteen birds showed up at Tanque Verde Wash, likely the same flock that had been seen all winter at Reddington Road, which is not too far off.
