End of the World Birding – Streak-backed Oriole

November 12, 2020

Streak-backed Oriole, Tubac

A Streak-backed Oriole showed up several days ago at feeders in Tubac. An owner contacted a local birder, Bill Lisowski, who identified it as a streak-backed. These birds are rarely seen winter visitors to Arizona. It appears to be a first-year male.

That’s not all, Dear Readers. A Red-breasted Sapsucker showed up in Lower Florida Canyon just above the dam yesterday (Brian Nicholas). The jury is out on the status of the bird – hybrid or the real thing. I have some trouble with the bird’s mask. The breast should have a lot more red also. This species is very rare in SEAZ.
