Canoa Conservation Park
September 9, 2020
A northern jacana, a juvenile, showed up at Arivaca Lake on September 7, 2020. On the 8th many birders descended upon the spot, including six kayakers, but the bird was not refound. Interestingly, a roseate spoonbill and hooded warbler were seen on the evening of the 8th in the area of the parking lot/dock. On the evening of the 8th another juvenile northern jacana (the same bird?) showed up at the Green Vally Country Club GC. Permission was given to bird the golf course and the next morning there were about 12 birders looking. Of course the bird was not found. Then a message was received that the jacana was at Canoa Conservation Park – about 6 miles away. And there is was. Many birders observed. And combined with the many walkers and leashed dogs, the bird moved around a lot. It was not too shy, but would not allow a very close approach. Two solitary peeps and several lark buntings were also seen.
