EOTW Birding: Schrodinger’s Blackbird

May 25, 2020

Well Dear Friends, as the end of the world (EOTW) lingers vaguely in the near future, spring migration is kaput as summer approaches. Ahead we have heat, tropical rainstorms, and heat. Did I say “heat”? This really means that we get up before the sun and chase birds until 10, then retreat out of the sun. Madera Canyon offers some help, as it is usually 10-or-so degrees F cooler than the valley. Afternoons beginning about mid-June offer a chance of a thunderstorm and drenching rain that quickly soaks into the ground, but sometimes causes damage. The Santa Cruz River may make the Tubac trail north from the bridge messy with thick clayey mud and the footbridge across the river will be not be in place.

Schrodinger’s Blackbird. This was both a Red-winged and Tricolored until it sang. The one that got away. Looks a lot like a Tricolored. Its Red-winged voice gave it away. A quantum bird? Twin Lakes Golf Course, Wilcox AZ 5-24-2020.
