Ash Canyon at the End of the World

Rufous & Lucifer Hummingbird, Ash Canyon 8-15-23

I’ve been trying to find Lucifer Hummingbird for several months. They have been sporadically reported at nearby Box Canyon since June. But I continually dip. As it turns out, this bird is easy to find at the Ash Canyon Preserve near Sierra Vista. A 90-mile drive. But since these birds will be leaving in the near future, I finally decided to drive out there. I arrived just after 6am, and the feeders had just been put out/filled. There were clouds of mostly Broad-billed, Black-chinned, Rufous, Costas, Annas, Broad-tailed, two Rivoli’s, one Plain-capped Starthroat and at least three Lucifers including 2 males. Other observers had four Lucifers, and one person claimed nine! Calliopes were also claimed, but I did not see any.
